My New Fitness Routine

Im going to give this a try. Yes, I'm old. If it takes me 6 weeks to get to 100 push ups I will feel even older. Here's to time flying...
p.s. after further review, its a pretty cheesy program, designed for people way older than me. But I'm doing it anyway! In my initial test I hit 30 before I collapsed.

Healthy and Cheap!

Ran across an article on 20 healthy foods under $1 per serving. They have good short explanations of the benefits and per serving costs. Here's my top 10.

  1. Bananas
  2. Eggs
  3. Wild Rice
  4. Broccoli
  5. Nuts
  6. Spinach
  7. Beets
  8. Whole Grain Pasta
  9. Watermelon
  10. Kale
They also had some random ones on the list, like pumpkin seeds and coffee.

The First Female President

After you watch the video, you'll understand why... sadly, there is no sound, but let your imagination do the rest.

Mental Recession

This is where John McCain lived for about two years. Holy shit. It exactly fits the French Guiana confinement jungle cells depicted in Papillion. The thief hero of that movie paced back and forth, forth and back, four steps in each direction, turn, repeat, to stay in shape and keep from going insane. He ate a lot of bugs too.

McCain saw these photos, taken by a documentary filmmaker, and... laughed. Umm...
Build him a statue, a museum, give him all the ribbons in dress circle, but for got sakes keep his finger off the button.

Water Water Everywhere!

They found water on the moon (care of Nat'l Geo). So, by my amateur calculations, we have water on Earth, Jupiter's moons, Mars and the Earth's moon. Only life on Earth though, unfortunately.

Anyway, back to the moon. They JUST discovered water molecules embedded in volcanic glass beads that were brought back from the moon by the Apollo missions in the 60s and 70s. Pretty startling stuff, especially because it throws a wrench in astronomers' long held theory that the moon was formed 4.5 billion years ago by a planet colliding with earth. For that to happen, the explosion would have reached a certain temp (that of molten solids) and would have vaporised the molecules that form water. So, the debate rages.

For some cool facts on the Moon, go here.

Ira Glass on creativity

I found this video interview with Ira Glass, who hosts "This American Life" on NPR (and its on a TV station too, maybe showtime?) about being creative. Ira Glass is not the most creative person I know, but his shows are always out there in terms of covering topics that no one else is. In fact its really an engrossing program and on the chance that I am in the car on the weekend and happen to hear it, I always stay tuned. I'm posting the video based on that alone. I haven't even watched the whole thing myself yet.

I found this over at lifehacker.

Need some crocs?

They have em in spades at the Seattle airport. Check the obnoxiousness above.

NYT on slowing the process of aging

So apparently, according to the New York Times, reporting on a couple different research studies;

Red wine may be much more potent than was thought in extending human lifespan, researchers say in a new report that is likely to give impetus to the rapidly growing search for longevity drugs.

The study is based on dosing mice with resveratrol, an ingredient of some red wines. Some scientists are already taking resveratrol in capsule form, but others believe it is far too early to take the drug, especially using wine as its source, until there is better data on its safety and effectiveness.

Drugs are meaningful

Recommended reading of the day. Basically, people who have taken psychedelic drugs consistently rank the experience "as the most, or one of the five most, personally meaningful and spiritually significant (experiences) of their lives." click through for more from Boing Boing and the researchers from Johns Hopkins.
