David Blaine - Record set

Following up on the David Blaine post from last week. He successfully set the world record for breath holding (is that even the correct term?) on Oprah today. Good for him. The AP covered it simply and I pasted it below.

CHICAGO (AP) - David Blaine set a new world record Wednesday for breath-holding, 17 minutes and 4 seconds.
The feat was broadcast live during "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and the studio audience cheered as divers pulled the 35-year-old magician from a water-filled sphere.
Blaine looked relaxed afterward and said the record was "a lifelong dream."
The previous record was 16 minutes and 32 seconds, set Feb. 10 by Switzerland's Peter Colat, according to Guinness World Records.
Before he entered the sphere, Blaine inhaled pure oxygen through a mask to saturate his blood with oxygen and flush out carbon dioxide. Guinness says up to 30 minutes of so-called "oxygen hyperventilation" is allowed under its guidelines.
Previously, Blaine was buried alive for a week in a see-through coffin in New York and spent more than a month suspended from a glass box by the River Thames in London.

LA traffic and Coachella

This is supposedly the busiest intersection in LA (its in the valley). Check out how many lanes you have to cross to get kitty corner. Seventeen! I found this while reading the local LA blog LAist, which i was also reading for their "Tips for Coachella." I scored some VIP tickets and am heading out tonight to spend the weekend in 102,000 degree heat watching amazing bands. Im especially excited for in no particular order,

Portishead
Justice
Murs
Raconteurs

I'll stop there. Stay tuned, I'll definitely be posting as long as my cell phone has juice! For all you jealous types, here's the full lineup with more info at the official site.

Genius

This is how I feel when my alarm goes off in the morning...

Time waster

Check out this addicting typing game where you compete against other people across the interweb to race your cars to the finish by typing movie quotes and music lyrics without errors. If they had this game in my high school computer class I wouldn't have had to switch keyboard plugs with my friend so we could discretely have conversations about the girls in class.

Yes, that means that me and my friend pioneered IM chatting prior to the internet, but really our keyboards just typed messages on each others computers, we couldn't see what we had written or if there were typos. Considering everyone was in this class to learn to type, it was tough. I would almost say I learned more about cryptography, deciphering my friends messages, than I did about typing. But you have to understand, there we a lot of cute older girls in the class.

As a result of this game I realize for all the time I spend typing on the keyboard, I'm a slow, inaccurate typer (36 wpm).

David Blaine is at it again

As all scientists and most rational humans already know, at some point, mammals evolved from fish. As a result, even after millions of years of evolution, humans still have a couple of reflexes in our bodies that are triggered by water. One in particular, called the mamallian diving reflex, springs into action as soon as your face is submerged under water. Instantly your body tightens the capillaries and slows the heart rate so you don't use as much oxygen. Free diving has really exploited this reflex and now, "magician" aka "endurance artist" David Blaine is going to try to set the world record for holding one's breath. Its currently at 16 minutes - with lungs full of pure oxygen. Im not all that excited about the feat, though it is cool, what im excited about is the NYT article that talks about the human body and how is deals with things like lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide build up. Read more at the NYT.

Slave to my Television

Uh oh. Looks like the coolest government org wants me to sit transfixed in front of the TV pondering mystical space-related concepts and my place in the universe...

NASA to Broadcast Earth Views in High Definition Television
HOUSTON — Since humans first flew in space, nothing has captivated astronauts more than the view of home out the window of their spacecraft. In honor of Earth Day, April 22, NASA will make those views available to people here on Earth with an event highlighting imagery taken by astronauts and the science behind it.
For the first time ever, NASA Television will air a special hour-long broadcast of views of Earth taken in High Definition, or HD, by astronauts on past space shuttle and International Space Station missions.

The special HD broadcast will air between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 18, and replay at the same time on Monday, April 21. It will air every hour from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22.

The Friday HD broadcast will feature a silent version of the Earth views. The broadcasts on Monday and Tuesday will include a discussion of the views by Dr. Justin Wilkinson, a scientist with the Crew Earth Observations Office at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The footage also will air on standard NASA TV during regularly scheduled Video File broadcasts. For technical information on how to receive the special broadcast in high definition, and for NASA TV streaming video, downlink and scheduling information, visit NASA TV.

So, if anyone is aching to see what the world looks like from space on a ridiculously oversized HDTV, you know where to find me. link to Gizmodo

First harvest

We got impatient and harvested a couple radishes and beets, the first harvest from the community garden! I've never seen radishes that red, not even at the farmers market. Must have been the radioactive fetilizer.

Morning Funk

A little something different to get people moving.

Wake Up - Hamilton Bohannon

Hamilton was from Atlanta, worked for Stevie Wonder, produced a bunch of Motown artists in Detroit and laid down some good stuff in this track existing somewhere between Funk, Soul and Disco, but also decidedly 80's. If the music moves you, you can find his greatest hits here. If you're really feeling this song, its from the 1983 album "The Bohannon Drive."

Eat locally

So I bought into this community garden so I could try my hand at growing some of my own food and relieve a bit of my dependence on supermarkets (not that I have been frequenting them that much lately). It's definitely helped me be more attentive and focused on alternative ways to get food. Plus its brought me into more contact with stories about local food in LA. I've read and posted about some previously here. Today brought me a Wired story about eating locally and how to take it up a step from just shopping at your local farmers market to actually finding out where it comes from and how you can take it even a step more local with farm co-ops and helpful websites. Its a pretty good introduction for some easy steps to take. I haven't taken them yet, but if you want to, here's where to find them.

First Step To Argentina

Hello Dedicated Blog Readers,
If your couch seems particularly roomy or your apartment suddenly
less smelly, that is because I am now on my way to Buenos Aires,
Argentina for a little vacation. Psyched. I will try to send photos
and keep an online diary of my exploits when I can.
This first entry is from dc. Hilarious doll. No pun intended. I
bought an Obama shirt for the friend I'm crashing with. I'm curious
how much people care about the election. A lot, I'm guessing.
See you again when I'm an antipodean!

Urban Reefs

In case you didn't know. Sea Bass take the subway too. Today's New York Times reports on a 'hot trend' in ocean ecology of the coast of New Jersey.

One by one, a machine operator has been shoving hundreds of retired New York City subway cars off a barge, continuing the transformation of a barren stretch of ocean floor into a bountiful oasis, carpeted in sea grasses, walled thick with blue mussels and sponges, and teeming with black sea bass and tautog.
“They’re basically luxury condominiums for fish,” Jeff Tinsman, artificial reef program manager for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and environmental Control, said as one of 48 of the 19-ton retirees from New York City sank toward the 666 already on the ocean floor.

Mr. Tinsman particularly favors the newer subway cars with stainless steel on the outside to create reefs. “We call these the DeLoreans of the deep,” he said.

Averages

Ever wonder about the average American salary? If so, you are not alone. According to Yahoo, it's the most common search term when people are searching for the "average" something. The Yahoo story also lists the top 20 searches that include average in the search terms. It's a pretty interesting window into what comparisons people look to the Internet for. It seems oddly heavy on test scores and strange body measurements. Here's the top 10, the rest arent that interesting either.

    1. Average American Salary
    2. Average Credit Score
    3. Average Weight by Height
    4. Average Teacher Salary by State
    5. Average SAT Scores
    6. Average IQ
    7. Average Cost of Dental Implants
    8. Average Blood Pressure
    9. Average Tattoo Prices
    10. Average Cost of Braces
The other day a friend and I were trying to piece together the average salary for LA. I was going with something pretty low, around $45K, while she was maintaining that it was pushed a lot higher because of all the people making crazy money in entertainment. All I could find after a quick search was this site, which lists $40K as the average for LA and Long Beach but it doesn't have a date, so reliability is out the door (side note, anesthesiologists raked in a average of $208K at the time of this report. More than surgeons - who knew?).

Stephen Hawking speaks at TED

One of the smartest people in the history of the world answers three simple questions inside of 10 minutes.

  1. How did the universe begin?
  2. How did life begin?
  3. Are we alone in the galaxy?

It was recorded at the TED conference in March 2008. When you watch this, give yourself some time to absorb.

Friday Fun - the Periodic Table of Elements

Call it flashback Friday, I just took a quiz to see how many of the elements on the periodic table I could name - from scratch. I pretty much exhausted my brain (and patience) after 6 minutes. I remembered more than I thought i would, but missed some major ones (high school was a long time ago). How many can you remember?

Take the periodic table challenge and find out! I posted my score in the comments.

Art and Architecture = Enternal Youth?

A story today marks one of those special occasions when the NYT profiles "different" people. In this case the subjects are two very out there artists, Arakawa and Gins, who recently completed their first house in the US - a crazy, fun house-looking structure they claim will increase your immune system and sustain longer life.

Then Ms. Gins, 66, began holding forth about the health benefits of the house, officially called Bioscleave House (Lifespan Extending Villa). Its architecture makes people use their bodies in unexpected ways to maintain equilibrium, and that, she said, will stimulate their immune systems.
“They ought to build hospitals like this,” she said.
A reporter, who thinks they should never, ever build hospitals like this, tried to go with the flow. Like the undulating floor, Arakawa and Gins, as they are known professionally, tend to throw people off balance.

...In 45 years of working together as artists, poets and architects, they have developed an arcane philosophy of life and art, a theory they call reversible destiny. Essentially, they have made it their mission — in treatises, paintings, books and now built projects like this one — to outlaw aging and its consequences.

... In addition to the floor, which threatens to send the un-sure-footed hurtling into the sunken kitchen at the center of the house, the design features walls painted, somewhat disorientingly, in about 40 colors; multiple levels meant to induce the sensation of being in two spaces at once; windows at varying heights; oddly angled light switches and outlets; and an open flow of traffic, unhindered by interior doors or their adjunct, privacy. All of it is meant to keep the occupants on guard. Comfort, the thinking goes, is a precursor to death; the house is meant to lead its users into a perpetually “tentative” relationship with their surroundings, and thereby keep them young.

The reporter starts skeptical, which in the face of the unbridled enthusiasm of Arakawa (called a 10-yr old trapped in a 60-yr old Japanese man's body) could make him seem curmudgeonly, but by the end you can tell that even he (along with the couple's numerous financial and artistic supporters) got caught up in the whirlwind of zest and passion. The full story can be found here and an audio slide show here.

thanks pops

Galactic Pizza

College rulez. I met so many awesome people in a little city in the midwest (Madison) and they continue to do amazing things. Pete, who I met through my friend Andy, started Galactic Pizza in Minneapolis with a killer one-two punch of super hero hilarity and super-conscious social responsibility. I eat there every time I'm back home. Amazingly, I saw that he was featured on CNN Money! Here's the quick breakdown: his restaurant makes really good pizza with locally grown organic ingredients (even vegan!) and donates a portion of profits to charitable causes. The tasty pizzas are available for delivery by crazy costumed super hero delivery drivers who use electric or human powered vehicles. The costumes are made by a local seamstress and delivery people are able to create and develop their own super hero identities. They also have quite a compelling Vision of the Future.

Check out CNN for more info and pics and if you're ever in Minneapolis, head to 29th and Lyndale, uptown for "pizza with a conscious."

Thanks Erin!

UPDATE: Thanks to Cara's comment, not only do they deliver pizza but they also foil robberies. This makes my day! Hilarious.

Best of Craigslist

Dear Hipster Record Store Clerk,

Thank you for judging me on the CD I bought yesterday. Our passive-aggressive altercation made me realize how conformist I am for buying an old Rage Against The Machine album. Your condescension was just the intellectual wake-up call I needed.

I discovered a new me yesterday, and my eyes were opened in a new way. Thanks to you, I realize now that the key to enlightenment is reading Pitchfork, watching High Fidelity, listening to Velvet Underground, having a tattoo of a star on the inside of my wrist, growing an ironic mustache, living in the Mission, and wearing a too-small sweater, multi-colored 70’s ski-vest, chunky plastic-frame glasses, a high school sports T-shirt, air-tight black jeans, and Nixon-era Chuck Taylors.

I had it all wrong, man. You showed me that a skilled job and a comfortable living is just a lie. I need to go to art school, have my parents pay my rent, join a Joy Division-influenced band, and wait for a record deal, like you.

I’m totally missing out in life. So thanks again for mocking me. I mean, at first I thought you were just a pathetic, frustrated musician trying to feel better about yourself. But now I see you’re an uncompromising visionary.

No one will ever understand you. You’re so different.

Signed,

Everyone Not Like You

Latest Banksy

The latest Banksy piece in the UK has kids pledging allegiance to a plastic bag from Tesco - the major retail chain in the UK. How easy would it be to adopt this to the US, or other developed nations? What corporate entity would be the most appropriate?

  • Wal-Mart
  • Target
  • Best Buy
  • Walgreens
  • Apple
  • CocaCola
Any others? What about developing nations, is this still applicable?
