Wicked animation

I've been super absent from up late thursday lately. A spell of traveling, the start of a couple new enterprises, including a new blog project and the start of school, have pulled me in many directions. I'm finally back home and getting things back under control.

Here's one of four amazing animation videos that won a contest sponsored by Radiohead and aniboom (a you tube for animation projects). This is so creepy, but still really fun and hopeful. I must say, I have no idea how dude created this crazy stuff. Head to aniboom to check out the other winners.

Secret City!

Out of nowhere, I remembered coming home from school as a kid and watching Secret City on PBS. It was one of my favorite shows. I would sit in front of the little TV in my living room with a pad and pencil trying desperately to keep up with Commander Mark. Today I found a treasure trove of clips (and a classic trip down memory lane) thanks to YouTube member culturaldetritusnyc.

I was embroiled in a contentious conversation last night about brilliant movies and to me, there is no question that this was brilliant TV. Enjoy. Head to YouTube for more episodes and a closer look at the secret city mural. Seems they are still trying to keep the show alive and have started a website supporting the Draw Squad. Ah, memories.

Color of the Year

Pantone, the authority on all things pertaining to color, has selected the color of 2009. DIY and home improvers ready your paint brushes and behold PANTONE 14-0848 Mimosa, "a cheery and deep yellow."
Not only does the color share the name of a bubbly and refreshing morning beverage, it is said to best embody optimism and hope in today's changing and challenging times. From the Pantone press release;

"The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation."
For the SAT friendly, Pantone is to artistic designers like Morton and Bassett is to professional chefs. They catalogue the best colors so designers can keep consistency within their designs. I'm really taken by the purity and clarity of Pantone colors and lust over their the markets at art stores. Here's a sampling.

More Choe

I posted about David Choe before. But today added his blog to my links (I'm very discerning - he should feel proud). Actually, when I read his blog today, it struck me as a little more promotional than when I first started reading. I haven't been there in a while and recent posts seems to be about his shows and his prints for sale, less about working and life, less thoughtful. But he also had this picture of a recent piece in NYC and that made it worth it.

Itty Bitty Pictures

My first corporate friendly post is going to be about a photo contest for tiny things (like the soy leaf above). If you ever wanted to see what a mouse's brain or vitamin C look like magnified by an incredible amount, you can preview and vote for your favorite images here. Not all are nano-photography, but they are close enough for me. Below are drops of water floating on a mylar sheet.

Artistic moment # 13825691

I'm loving this Michel de Broin sculpture in the woods in France titled "Superficielle" or "Superficial." From the artists website:

Mirror, glue, cement / Vosges, Alsace, France

Upon invitation to reflect on the notion of transparency, that led me into the forest to envelop the contour of a large stone with fragments of mirror. The large stone, tucked away deep in the woods, became a reflective surface for its surroundings. In this play of splintered radiance, the rock disappears in its reflections.

Video Game Video-ganza!

I work on both of the games involved in this awesome video series. For video game fans I'm talking about Halo 3 and Viva Pinata. (Sis - you should share this with Jaywalka). But anyway, they are epic and hilarious. See the video below and then the making of below that (which is almost more impressive) and then the inspriation below that. Suffice it to say, I think video game developers have more fun.

Chainsaw Maid

Claymation horror at its finest. It's gore and creepy sounds and blood and clay all wrapped up in a cute package. If you enjoy this, there is much more here.

Found this over at Boing Boing.

New Music Wednesday

I haven't even listened to this all the way through, but when two of the most respected, creative and forward thinking artists in the world release an album (online as well, such trailblazers!), I'm going to pay attention and share it with who ever I can. Stream David Byrne and Brian Eno's new album "Everything That Happens Will Happen Today" below.

If for some reason the video won't play go here.

Ira Glass on creativity

I found this video interview with Ira Glass, who hosts "This American Life" on NPR (and its on a TV station too, maybe showtime?) about being creative. Ira Glass is not the most creative person I know, but his shows are always out there in terms of covering topics that no one else is. In fact its really an engrossing program and on the chance that I am in the car on the weekend and happen to hear it, I always stay tuned. I'm posting the video based on that alone. I haven't even watched the whole thing myself yet.

I found this over at lifehacker.
